Fire Water Containment System in Maasland

This project shows how SLAMDAM was used in Maasland to contain contaminated firefighting water. A temporary basin stored the water safely before treatment. As a result, the site team could respond quickly while reducing environmental risk.

Project Overview

Background & Goal

Following a fire incident, the team needed to manage large volumes of extinguishing water. Because the water was contaminated, it could not be discharged into the environment.

The main challenge was speed. A safe storage area had to be created quickly so the polluted water could be contained before treatment.

Fixed basins or tank systems were not immediately available. Therefore, the situation required a flexible solution that could be deployed without delay.

Solution

WaveSave deployed SLAMDAM on-site to form a temporary storage basin. The team installed the system in a circular configuration and filled it with water to create a stable barrier.

This setup contained the polluted extinguishing water within a controlled area. In addition, it required minimal ground preparation and could be installed quickly. That speed was critical in this emergency situation.

Unlike permanent infrastructure, SLAMDAM can be adapted to different volumes and locations. As a result, it is well suited to emergency response and environmental protection use cases.

Clients and Donors

The client, Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland, financed the project. In addition, the water authority is a member of the Unie van Waterschappen in the Netherlands.

Location

Location: Maasland, South Holland, the Netherlands

Timeline: 2017

Project impact

In Maasland, SLAMDAM provided a practical solution in a time-critical situation.

Key outcomes included:

  • Safe containment of polluted fire extinguishing water
  • Rapid deployment without construction
  • Flexible storage capacity depending on volume
  • Reduced environmental risk
  • Support for controlled water treatment

Why containment of extinguishing water is critical

After a fire, extinguishing water can contain harmful substances. If authorities do not contain it quickly, it can spread into soil, drainage systems, or nearby waterways.

Temporary containment helps authorities to:

  • prevent contaminated water from spreading
  • isolate hazardous substances
  • prepare the water for safe transport and treatment
  • respond quickly without building permanent infrastructure

As a result, containment supports both environmental protection and emergency response.

A practical solution for emergency water containment

This project shows that SLAMDAM can be used for more than flood protection. Besides acting as a flood barrier, it can also function as a temporary water storage and containment system during emergencies.

For example, the system is relevant for:

  • Fire response scenarios
  • Industrial incidents
  • Environmental protection measures
  • Temporary water storage needs
