What is a flood control system?

A flood control system keeps flood water away from people and property, or limits the damage when it arrives. Flood control can combine several types of measures:

  • Permanent structures, such as dikes, levees, floodwalls and retention basins, which protect one place for decades.
  • Mobile flood barriers, which are placed only when a flood is expected and removed afterwards.
  • Nature-based solutions, such as wetlands, floodplains and mangroves, which slow, store and absorb water.
  • Forecasting and early warning, which gives people time to act.

WaveSave works on the last three, supported by hydrodynamic modelling and hands-on training.

Which flood control solution fits your situation?

Every flood risk is different. The right flood control solution depends on how fast the water rises, how much warning time you have and whether you need protection for days or for decades.

How we deliver flood control projects

  1. Assess the risk. Hydrodynamic modelling shows where water will flow and where protection has the greatest effect.
  2. Design the solution. Our cost-benefit analysis determines the right mix of barriers, monitoring and nature-based measures.
  3. Deploy and train. We install the system with local teams and train them to deploy and maintain it independently; in our experience, people can learn to deploy SLAMDAM within a day.
  4. Monitor and warn. Together with partners such as Hesotech, early warning systems keep authorities informed, so they can act before water reaches homes and infrastructure.

Independently tested

SLAMDAM was tested for leakage by TÜV Nederland, tested at full scale with waves in the Delta Flume of Deltares, and tested in the hydraulic laboratory of NAHRIM in Malaysia, which issued a Hydro Product Testing Certificate. WaveSave projects have been delivered with partners including UNEP, the African Development Bank, the Adaptation Fund and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center. MIT Technology Review named WaveSave one of its 10 climate tech companies to watch for 2026.
