Irrigation Systems for Dry Seasons

WaveSave’s irrigation systems bring water to crops through drip, sprinkler and underground distribution, with smart controls that adjust to the weather and track water use.

Our intelligent irrigation systems combine robust infrastructure with smart technology to maximize water efficiency and crop yield while minimizing resource consumption.

From flood protection to irrigation: Bubanza, Burundi

In a pilot in Mpanda, a commune of about 25,000 people in Bubanza Province in north-western Burundi, SLAMDAM was designed to protect the community from flooding while also storing water for times of drought (UNEP). The stored water can then be used for irrigation in the dry season.

“SlamDam was able to harness the flood water enabling the community to plant and also to use the harnessed water for irrigation during the dry season, thus improving their food security,” said Omar Saleh, Managing Director of WaveSave, in UNEP’s report.

Frequently asked questions about irrigation systems

What are the main types of irrigation systems?

The main types are surface, sprinkler, drip and subsurface irrigation. WaveSave’s irrigation systems use sprinkler, drip and underground distribution.

Drip irrigation delivers water slowly at the roots through emitters, so less water is lost to evaporation and runoff. Sprinkler irrigation sprays water over the crop like rain, which suits larger fields and crops that tolerate wet leaves.

Smart irrigation adjusts watering to the weather and measures how much water is used, so crops are watered when they need it rather than on a fixed schedule. Zone control limits watering to where it is needed, and leak detection flags leaks early so they can be repaired.
