Frequently asked questions about GIS mapping for water management

What is GIS mapping in water management?

GIS mapping combines spatial data, such as terrain, land use, rivers and infrastructure, in layered maps. In water management, it shows where water flows, where risks are highest and where measures work best.

Watershed delineation determines the area of land that drains to a given point on a river or stream, based on a digital elevation model. It is the starting point for flood and water availability studies.

A flood risk map combines the flood hazard (how likely a flood is, and how deep and wide the water gets, from flood simulations) with exposure (the buildings, roads and people in the flood zone) and their vulnerability. Together they show where flood risk is highest.
