SlamDam Strengthens Flood Resilience

Flood barrier solutions for waterways in Fiji are essential to manage rising water levels and reduce flood risks. In this project, WaveSave deploys SLAMDAM mobile flood barriers to protect rivers, drainage systems, and surrounding communities.

Project Overview

Background & Goal

Ba Town, a commercial and agricultural hub in Fiji, faces escalating flood risks due to climate change-induced extreme weather events. The Ba River basin’s frequent flooding threatens critical infrastructure, disrupts market operations, and endangers local communities. Traditional flood control solutions like dredging and levees have proven inadequate against increasingly severe flood events, necessitating an innovative approach to flood protection and water management.

Flood barrier solutions for Fiji waterways

The goal was to implement SlamDam’s proven technology as a comprehensive flood control solution to protect Ba Town’s critical infrastructure while enhancing community resilience through real-time monitoring and rapid emergency flood response capabilities.

Solution

Protecting rivers and drainage systems with mobile barriers

This flood barrier Fiji waterways project focuses on managing flood risks in river systems. WaveSave delivered an end-to-end flood management system centered around our flagship SLAMDAM mobile flood barriers, incorporating advanced predictive analytics and community engagement:

  • Rapid-deployment SLAMDAM Barriers
  • Early Warning Systems
  • Barriers Integrated with Urban Drainage
  • GIS-based Deployment Mapping
  • Urban-specific Installation Protocols
  • Community Training Programs

Unlike fixed infrastructure, WaveSave provides deployable solutions such as SLAMDAM, allowing water authorities to respond quickly to changing conditions and manage water levels more effectively.

Clients and Donors

Primary client was Ministry of Waterways, Fiji financially supported by the Government of the Netherlands.

Location

Location: Ba Market, Ba Town, Fiji

Timeline: 2022 – 2024

Project impact

Deploying flood barriers in Fiji waterways enables improved control of water levels and reduces flood risks in surrounding areas.

  • Protected Critical Urban Infrastructure
  • Reduced Disruption to Daily Operations
  • Enhanced Local Emergency Response
  • Improved Community Flood Preparedness
  • Scalable Model for Urban Flood Resilience

The project supports improved water management practices in line with international approaches promoted by organizations such as the World Bank and national authorities like the Fiji Ministry of Waterways.

Why flood barriers are critical for waterways

Waterways such as rivers and drainage systems play a central role in flood dynamics. When water levels rise rapidly, these systems can overflow and cause significant damage to surrounding areas.

Flood barriers provide a practical solution to manage water flow and prevent overflow in critical locations. Their flexibility allows them to be deployed quickly where needed, without requiring permanent infrastructure.

For water authorities, flood barriers are an effective tool to improve water management, reduce risks, and enhance resilience in vulnerable regions.
